Hugh Baird College wins RCU Support for Students Award!

RCU would like to congratulate Hugh Baird College, this year’s winners of the RCU Support for Students AoC Beacon Award. Their initiative to be a “Beacon for their Community” has transformed support for young people with high needs, creating a more inclusive and empowering learning environment.

Recognising the importance of taking education to young people – rather than expecting them to attend the main college site – Hugh Baird College has worked closely with its local authority and partner organisations to develop a more accessible and inclusive approach to education. Through a range of innovative programmes, community partnerships and personalised support, the college is engaging young people across the community, particularly those at risk of becoming Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) and learners with high needs. Tailored care and support plans ensure that individual needs are recognised and met, helping learners build confidence and progress into further education, training and employment.

  • Chris Lee, Director of Marketing and Communications at RCU:

“RCU is proud to sponsor the AoC Beacon Awards and delighted to announce Hugh Baird College as this year’s winner of the RCU Support for Students award. Their initiative is a fantastic example of how colleges can ensure education is accessible, inclusive and impactful for all. Congratulations to everyone involved.”

Now in its 30th year, the AoC Beacon Awards celebrate excellence and innovation across further education. The awards recognise best practice, encourage collaboration, and promote the sharing of initiatives that enhance student experiences across the sector.

  • Rachael Hennigan OBE, Principal and Chief Executive at Hugh Baird College::

“Winning this award is an incredible honour and a true reflection of the dedication, compassion and innovation shown by our staff every single day. Our teams work tirelessly to ensure every learner feels valued and has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the challenges they face. To have that work recognised is something we are all immensely proud of.”

  • David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges:

“Every year I am blown away by the standard of the Beacon Award entries. They are tribute to the scale of innovation and expertise in further education colleges across the UK, and the impact they have in their regions. This year, it was harder than ever to decide on just one winner per category.

I want to say a huge congratulations to everyone who met the Beacon standard, and of course, to our winners. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to the communities you serve, and I hope you enjoy the celebrations, you should be proud of the work you do and the impact you make on people’s lives.”
