Congratulating The Winners Of The RCU Support For Students Award 2025- Wirral Met College!

RCU would like to congratulate Wirral Met College, this year’s winners of the RCU Support for Students AoC Beacon Award! Their Design for Life initiative has transformed support for high-needs students, creating a more inclusive and empowering learning environment.

Recognising the increasing demand for independent living skills training and the challenges faced by students with sensory processing differences and high anxiety levels, the college took proactive steps to enhance both its curriculum and specialist facilities. With support from external specialists, they developed a trauma-informed approach, leading to the creation of state-of-the-art, fully accessible training rooms designed to support sensory regulation and promote independence.

Alongside this, the college introduced a sensory regulation curriculum, equipping students with the skills to understand and manage their individual needs. A key outcome is the Neurodiversity Council, a student-led body giving learners a voice in shaping their education. Having played a key role in designing the new spaces, students now drive change to improve inclusivity for current and future learners. Through this initiative, Wirral Met College has set a benchmark for inclusive education, breaking down barriers and improving independence, self-advocacy, and life outcomes for high-needs students.

Now in its 29th year, the AoC Beacon Awards celebrate excellence and innovation across further education. The awards highlight best practice, encourage collaboration, and promote the sharing of initiatives that enhance student experiences across the sector.

Chris Lee, RCU Director of Marketing and Communications said:

“RCU are proud to sponsor the AoC Beacon Awards and delighted to announce Wirral Met College as this year’s winners! Their ‘Design for Life’ initiative is a fantastic example of innovation in student support, empowering high-needs learners with the confidence, skills, and self-advocacy tools to thrive. Congratulations to everyone involved!”

Mark White, Chair of AoC’s Charitable Trust said: “The AoC Beacon Awards showcase exactly why colleges are so important to every community and why people value them. This award recognises examples of excellent practical teaching and learning. The work of the winning college shows how important colleges are in providing students with the necessary skills for the real world.”
